La Misma Canción
La Misma Canción (The Same Song) is an ongoing, multi-site project that works with primarily latinx communities by making connections with birds that migrate from their home countries to where they are living now. The project started as I imagined if the birds I was hearing in Texas were the same birds my family in El Salvador could have heard. The project uses drawing, research practices, bird walks, festivals, installations and more to explore migration, ecology, sound studies, land ownership, culture, mutual aid and more.
Project partners include The San Antonio River Foundation, The Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Carnegie Picture Lab, Amanda Evans, Tia Kramer, and the Lady Bird Wildflower Center.
Migratory BirdFest, Prescott, WA (2024)
A school-wide festival to welcome migrating birds created in collaboration with Prescott School students, teachers and staff, Walla Walla Immigrant Rights Coalition, Blue Mountain Audubon Society, and the Pioneer Park Aviary.
The drawings on this banner were made by Prescott students in artist-led workshops and feature 10 birds that migrate annually between Eastern Washington and places to which the students have connections across the Americas.
The project was initiated as part of When the River Becomes a Cloud / cuando el río se transform en nube, a multi-year public artwork at Prescott School led by PSD artists-in-residence, Amanda Evans, and Tia Kramer through Carnegie Picture Lab’s Rural Art Initiative. This banner is supported by grants from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Community Engagement Org, ArtsWA and Whitman college CELRI.
